This is a Grade 11 non-credit course which focuses on advanced writing skills including grammar, sentence structure, the writing process and writing paragraphs, essays and research papers.

English Grammar Skills 11 Total Hours: 96
This course helps students improve their grammar and editing skills in order to be successful in Provincial English 12. The course helps students to identify and correct simple sentence errors, run on sentence errors and fragment sentence errors. The students learn to use sentence combining techniques to make more complex sentences through the introduction of subordination and coordination. Students also learn how to identify and correct verb tense errors, subject verb agreement errors, punctuation errors and a number of other grammar errors. The focus on writing fluency includes the introduction of transition words, ways to improve word choice, and ways to reduce wordiness. The course also covers some common EAL errors.

University Prep Writing Sk 12 Total Hours: 96
Students in this Provincial Level course (offered both in the classroom and on-line) write essays including the research essay. Sentence skills are polished while editing skills are strengthened. These skills help students meet the demands of college academic and university writing requirements. Students work in the ABE Computer Lab using various software writing packages. Students can also study in a self-paced format.
Pre-requisite(s): English 0871 or equivalent; ABE Assessment score of 55 reading, 43 grammar, 0871 on writing sample

This is a Grade 12 non-credit course that focuses on provincial level reading skills like comprehension techniques, note taking skills, handling texts, skimming and scanning, making inferences, developing vocabulary etc. The course is available both through scheduled workshops and individual study or a combination of the two. One of the major assignments asks for a book report on a literary text.
