Purpose

The ABE Intermediate Certificate Program prepares students for success in further study, lifelong learning and employment by offering education and skills in a supportive and flexible learning environment.

The program gives students the opportunity to plan an education/employment pathway and acquire all of the necessary courses to access trades and career programs at VCC and other post-secondary institutions where Grade 10 is the minimum program admission requirement. 

 Duration

Students must complete a minimum of twenty (20) course credits. A minimum of eight (8) credits must be met by taking ENGL 0752 and MATH 0751. 

Students have three (3) years to complete the Program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

1. Apply critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills across a variety of disciplines.
2. Locate, select, and manage a variety of information resources.
3. Compose a variety of writing that is clear, logical, and structured.
4. Demonstrate reading skills and comprehension at the Intermediate level.
5. Solve practical problems involving fractions, decimals, ratios, percent, measurement, basic statistics, geometry, and 1st order algebra.

Program learning outcomes include core outcomes that align with the required courses in the program and additional outcomes that align with elective courses in the program. Additional program outcomes will be dependent on the elective courses chosen by the student.

Upon successful completion of the program, students may be able to:

1. Identify, describe, and use scientific concepts related to various areas of science.
2. Identify interests, values, and temperaments that will inform a career/educational pathway.
3. Apply study and communications skills required for success in further study or employment.
4. Use current computer technology to communicate, do research, produce material, manage information, and complete assignments.
5. Identify the characteristics of an active and responsible global citizen.
6. Discuss social issues from multiple perspectives and describe their personal points of view.
7. Discuss and evaluate Canadian history, government, culture, economy and geography from 1815 to 1914.

Admission Requirements

Students are admitted into the program on an individual course basis as determined by the College and Career Access and College Foundations departments.

Students taking ABE courses through the College and Career Access require departmental approval prior to registering for courses.

Transcript of Achievement

The evaluation of learning outcomes for each student is prepared by the instructor and reported to the Student Records Department at the completion of semesters.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

1. The course grade points shall be calculated as the product of the course credit value and the grade value.

2. The GPA shall be calculated by dividing the total number of achieved course grade points by the total number of assigned course credit values. This cumulative GPA shall be determined and stated on the Transcript at the end of each Program level or semester.

3. Grades shall be assigned to repeated courses in the same manner as courses taken only once. For the purpose of GPA calculation of grades for repeated courses, they will be included in the calculation of the cumulative GPA.
