Students are provided with ongoing English language instruction and support as they acquire the skills of a Health Care Assistant. Reading, writing, and interactive communication (listening and speaking) skills are taught concurrently and in conjunction with topics in the Health Care Assistant Level 1 curriculum. Students develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through activities and real-world communicative tasks relevant to the healthcare setting and aligned with the performance outcomes at the target Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels (Listening 7, Speaking 7, Reading 6, Writing 6). Through the development of these skills, students are able to understand and discuss course concepts, materials, and procedures. Students develop interpersonal professional communication skills in class and in clinical with an emphasis on clear and appropriate speaking and effective listening. Throughout the course, students also increase their awareness of workplace expectations, environments and appropriate language. Upon completion of ELSK 0701, students have the communication skills required to provide personal care for clients in a complex care setting and to interact with clients and health team members.

Students continue to receive ongoing English language instruction and support as they build on the skills developed in ELSK 0701. Reading, writing, and interactive communication (listening and speaking) skills are taught concurrently and in conjunction with topics in the Health Care Assistant Level 2 curriculum. Students continue to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through activities and real-world communicative tasks relevant to the healthcare setting and aligned with the performance outcomes at the target Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels (Listening 7, Speaking 7, Reading 6, Writing 6). Students’ interpersonal professional communication skills are enhanced in class and in clinical while providing care for clients in a special care setting. Throughout the course, students also increase their awareness of workplace expectations, environment and appropriate language. Upon completion of ELSK 0702, students have the communication skills required to provide personal care for clients in a special care setting and to interact professionally and appropriately with clients and health team members.

Students continue to receive ongoing English language instruction and support as they build on the skills developed in ELSK 0702. Reading, writing, and interactive communication (listening and speaking) skills are taught concurrently and in conjunction with topics in the Health Care Assistant Level 3 curriculum. Students continue to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through real world tasks within the clinical settings and are assessed using the target Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. Students’ interpersonal professional communication skills are enhanced in class and in clinical while providing care for clients in a complex care setting. Throughout the course, students also increase their awareness of workplace expectations, environment and appropriate language. Upon completion of ELSK 0703 students have the communication skills required to provide personal care for clients in a complex care setting and to interact professionally and appropriately with clients and health team members.

This course provides ongoing English language support for learners of English as an additional language as they acquire the skills of a Culinary Arts professional. It provides an introduction to the food industry and to the language and communication skills required for success as a cook. Job search strategies and socio-cultural competencies appropriate to the Canadian workplace will be introduced and practiced. Students receive Foodsafe Level 1 training and prepare for practicum placements in English speaking professional kitchens. This course is part of the full-time Culinary Arts program.

This course builds upon the communication skills of a Culinary Art professional developed in English for Culinary Arts 1. Learners gain strategies to develop their professional vocabulary, reading skills, writing skills and oral communication skills required for success as a cook. Additional job search strategies and socio-cultural competencies appropriate to the Canadian workplace will be introduced and practiced. This course is part of the full-time Culinary Arts program.

This course continues to develop the English language skills of learners of an additional language in the field of culinary arts and builds on the skills learned in English for Culinary Arts 2. It focuses especially on the communication skills required to communicate effectively as a cook and on the job search skills required to enter the workforce as a culinary arts professional. Students prepare for practicum placements in English-speaking professional kitchens. This course is part of the full-time Culinary Arts program.
