In this course, TESOL Diploma students are introduced to an overview of the theory and best practice instructional methodology used for teaching speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation in English to speakers of other languages. It also examines the characteristics and needs of the adult learner and the role culture plays in language learning, the fundamentals of lesson planning and the various approaches and methodologies that inform a teacher's decisions when planning lessons. In the course Diploma students will apply the foundational principles, methodology and terminology of ESL/EFL instruction to teaching and learning tasks.

Teaching Pronunciation  Total Hours: 30  
In this course, students will focus on the theory and best practice instructional methodology used for teaching pronunciation. Topics include basic English phonetics and phonology. The students learn to diagnose and correct the pronunciation errors of English language learners. As well Diploma students will design and micro-teach from a pronunciation-based lesson plan.

In this course, students will focus on second language writing theory, and best practice instructional methodology used to teach writing skills to English Language Learners from literacy to advanced levels. This course introduces participants to i) a variety of strategies, resources and skills to help develop writing skills, ii) basic assessment tools for the evaluation of writing skills, and iii) some potential uses of technology in the ESL/EFL classroom.

In this course, students will focus on the theory, best practice instructional methodology, and resources used for teaching reading skills to English Language Learners . This course also introduces course participants to a variety of approaches to integrated language teaching, reading assessment, and the potential uses of technology in the ESL/EFL reading classroom.

This 6 hour practical course introduces how to tutor English to speakers of other languages. This course covers a range of topics including the role of the tutor of ESOL, how to lesson plan for specific students, and how to market one's self as a tutor. Note: Students who have taken VCC's Homefront training (TUTR 1010) are eligible for elective credit for this course.

Teaching Grammar 1  Total Hours: 30  
In this course, students will concentrate on an analysis of English grammar for teaching purposes. Diploma students are also introduced to the theory and best practice methodology as it pertains to the teaching of English grammar to adult learners. In addition, learners are introduced to the teaching skills and techniques for presenting new grammar and organizing subsequent learner practice. Teaching Grammar 1 focuses on Beginner level through Intermediate level grammatical structures.

In this course, students continue the exploration of the theory and best practice instructional methodology used to teach English grammatical structures. This course focuses on the Intermediate to Advanced level structures. In the course, learners will review and analyze grammatical structures, design learning activities and sequenced lesson plans, and present components of a grammar lesson.

This dynamic, hands-on, six-hour workshop features information on how to be effective in identifying TESOL teaching positions that are right for you using print resources and the internet. In this course, students will continue the exploration of the theory and best practice instructional methodology used to teach pronunciation. Students will also focus on the development of advanced communication skills. Attention is paid to cross-cultural issues and socio-cultural differences in the language classroom, and speech awareness in terms of fluency, delivery and elements of clarity.

English as Additional Language (EAL) instructors need to be conversant in foundational concepts in adult English language learning contexts. In Foundations of TESOL in Adult Learning Environments 1, students discuss key principles, methodology and approaches to adult learning and second language acquisition. In addition, students develop foundational skills in lesson planning, delivery and assessment. Students also engage in reflective practice to develop a personal teaching philosophy.

Teach EAL Grammar & Vocab 1  Total Hours: 20  
Grammar and vocabulary are the essential building blocks of language. Students learn basic theory and methodology to teach English grammar and vocabulary to adult language learners. Students develop skills to present grammar/vocabulary and organize lesson plans to engage learners in meaningful practice. Students engage in small learning and teaching activities in addition to direct study of grammar development and vocabulary acquisition.

Teach EAL Reading & Writing  Total Hours: 20  
Reading and writing skills are essential for language learners to develop and use in English language contexts, from daily activities to academic pursuits to workplace communications. In this course, students learn foundational theories of second language writing and reading skill development in addition to methods to effectively teach these skills across language levels. Students explore a variety of strategies, resources, and tools to use in EAL reading and writing classes, including the selection of appropriate texts and tasks. Students explore basics of reading and writing assessment, including feedback. They develop lesson plans to develop reading and writing skills.

Students are introduced to the theory, instructional methodology and resources for the teaching of listening, speaking and pronunciation skills to adult English language learners. Students will explore key concepts and strategies and tools to develop listening and speaking-focused activities, lessons and assessment tools appropriate for a range of language learning levels and contexts. Students will also develop foundational skills in teaching and assessing English pronunciation.

TESOL Work Experience 1  Total Hours: 25  
Students apply the theory and methodology presented in the TESOL Short Certificate program in an authentic English language classroom setting. Students complete a total of 10 hours of observation in at least 2 separate EAL classroom contexts and 10 hours of supervised practice teaching in one or more ESL classrooms. Students prepare, deliver and assess language activities and lessons and receive guidance and feedback from their supervising classroom teacher. Students also complete self-reflection and self-evaluation activities.

In this course, students are introduced to the best practice methodology and resources needed to prepare non-native speakers of English for English-medium post secondary education. This course focuses on the specific instructional methodologies, techniques, and resources used to teach advanced level English as a Second or Other Language students. The course concentrates on the instructional approaches used to teach reading, composition , oral skills, literature and study skills.

Students are introduced to basic assessment tools for the evaluation of speaking and listening skills and the potential uses of technology in the ESL/EFL classroom.

This 6 hour interactive workshop examines how to teach vocabulary. The selection and sequence of vocabulary instruction is examined, learned, and applied. Topics include how to introduce new vocabulary, general rules and guidelines for teaching vocabulary, as well as creative and thought-provoking vocabulary development activities.

The purpose of the TESOL Internship is to provide Diploma students with the opportunity to put the theory and methodology presented in the program into practice in an English language classroom. The TESOL Internship consists of practice teaching preparation, and observation and supervised practice teaching in an ESL classroom.

The program of studies for this course provides a theoretical and practical foundation for teaching the English language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course also focuses on how to teach and incorporate pronunciation and grammar to provide integrated, multi-skilled lessons. Other areas such as language and culture, assessment and classroom management are also addressed. Students have the opportunity to do lesson presentations and micro-teaching sessions. A variety of materials useful at different language levels along with many examples of practical activities and techniques to use in the classroom are included.

Teaching IELTS Exam Prep  Total Hours: 12  
This 12-hour course will deal with a range of English language proficiency exams that are required most frequently by English-medium universities to screen ESL/EFL applicants in order to have evidence of sufficient mastery of the language. In particular, it will focus on IELTS, a commonly used proficiency exam that international students take. Participants will learn about the structure and requirement of each of the four sections of these exams:speaking, listening, reading and writing. They will practise a selection of actual test sections to better understand the demands made on students taking IELTS. Participants will also learn about a variety of communicative activities that reinforce the language skills required for students to succeed on the exam and make the eligible university applicants.
