ENGL 0300 is the first course in which all Basic Education English students will enrol. In this course, students will work with an instructor to identify strengths and gaps in their fundamental reading and writing skills. They will make a learning action plan to address these gaps. Students will also create a portfolio to practice and demonstrate their skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, sentence writing, and paragraph writing. This portfolio will be used to determine a student's placement in one of the six levels of Basic Education English. Students will also reflect and build on their skills for success as adult learners.

This courses introduces students to a variety of Canadian/non-Canadian, classic and modern short stories. Students also read classic and modern poems and learn about poetic literary devices. Through these works, students learn to identify a variety of literary devices and elements, including symbol, theme, character, irony, historical context, and setting. Students learn how to write, research, and edit essays and paragraphs. Students also develop presentation and critical thinking skills. Both ENGL 0981 and ENGL 0991 are required for completion of ABE Provincial level English (Literature)

This course includes the articulated learning outcomes of 0981 Provincial English, but it is delivered in a class-based format developed through thematic units taken from the FNESC First Peoples 12. It includes experiential learning, collaboration and group work, guest speakers, and field trips to connect students with local Indigenous individuals and groups. It adheres to First Nations protocols and makes explicit Indigenous ways of knowing, intellectual copyright of stories and directly addresses the issue of appropriation. It includes a variety of texts and connects orality to literacy. It includes origin stories, traditional strorytelling, speeches, digital narratives, TED Talks and stand-up comedy. It includes documentaries, songs, and poetry. The themes are family, identity, culture, community, oral history, land claims and land use. Both English First Peoples 12 Part 1 (ABE Provincial English First Peoples - Part 1) and English 12 First Peoples Part 2 (ABE Provincial English First Peoples - Part 2) are required for completion of ABE Provincial English First Peoples. This course was developed in consultation with local Indigenous communities.

Students read a variety of issue-related fiction, non-fiction and poetry to develop skills for comprehension and expression of information.

It includes a variety of texts, including video games, role plays, short stories, film, novels, graphic novels and speculative fiction. Students learn MLA formatting, write a research paper, and create a digital portfolio.
