RHFAC Training  Total Hours: 48  
Be at the forefront of Canada’s growing accessibility movement. This course is the first step towards qualifying to conduct ratings under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) program. Using a comprehensive national rating system, RHFAC methodology measures meaningful accessibility in the built environment. This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the fundamental skills and knowledge required to rate a site using the RHFAC methodology. With a combination of theory and hands-on practice, this course helps people who plan, design, and construct the built environment begin to understand accessibility from the perspective of people with different types of disabilities. The course identifies the challenges and barriers people with disabilities encounter and how a site can be adapted to make it more inclusive and welcoming for all members of society. Students will be introduced to Universal Design principles, as well as current legislation and standards. The course will finish with a comprehensive overview of the influential role that RHFAC Professionals play in any building project that involves design and construction. Upon successful completion of RHFAC Training, students are eligible to write the online exam (not administered as part of the course) to Become a Designated RHFAC Professional. Leadership and Ethics Nursing  Total Hours: 24  
This 24-hour course will provide participants an opportunity to learn and reflect on nursing ethics and leadership theory in its application to their role as nurse leaders. The course has been designed so that the participants will have an opportunity to return to the workplace to assess, implement and evaluate their leadership abilities grounded in ethics. It is important to note that this course places a strong emphasis on individual, reflective work and encouraging participants to move beyond self-imposed limitations. The facilitators believe that the “work” of leadership is an ongoing, dynamic process that requires leaders to continually evaluate skill sets, competencies, gaps and areas that require development. This self-reflection and a willingness to look at one’s strengths and weaknesses are critical to the development of leaders.

Foot Care Nursing  Total Hours: 50  
The Foot Care Nursing course provides basic and advanced education and training in the care of the middle-aged and elderly foot. This course includes in-class instruction, self-study and hands-on clinical experience. Students will typically work on 8-10 feet during the course. In addition to education for providing basic and advanced foot care, the student will learn the basics of private practice nursing and operating a small business, as well as the current best practices for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing foot care tools. Proof of current BC LPN or RN Licensure to register. Supplies costing approximately $550 are available at the VCC Downtown bookstore prior to first class. Through a combination of theory instruction and lab practice, students will have the opportunity to review the body systems and practice a method of completing a comprehensive assessment of the client. Participants will learn a systematic method of reviewing and organizing a physical assessment of a patient that begins at the head and works down to the toes. This course incorporates critical thinking strategies, the head to toe assessment, a review of the body systems, and documentation of appropriate information.

For students unable to attend the IV Therapy and Insertion course on campus, this distance option offers the same theory content and the ability to work at your own pace. Students will gain knowledge in locating sites, selecting equipment, insertion, adjusting flow rates, identifying complications, and selecting interventions for the adult patient receiving IV therapy. Registrants need practicing license and employer’s ability to certify skills in the workplace. Proof of current BC LPN or RN license is required to register. Registration is on-going for this course. Students may register at any time, and have three months to complete the course. This course is designed to prepare the Registered and Licensed Practical Nurse (RN/LPN) to initiate and maintain peripheral intravenous infusions. Through a combination of theory instruction and lab practice, students will develop their skills in IV insertion and maintenance, learn how to minimize patient discomfort and complications and increase insertion success rates. Students will gain knowledge in locating sites, selecting equipment, insertion, adjusting flow rates, identifying complications, and selecting interventions for the adult patient receiving IV therapy. After successful completion of this course, students are expected to develop proficiency in these skills with clinical mentorship and experience in their health care facility. When aspects of care or skill are beyond the nurse’s level of competence, it is the nurse’s responsibility to seek education and/or supports needed for that care setting (British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives). In this course, health care workers working in the context of detox and recovery will learn the basic knowledge and skills required to provide medications safely to designated clients. In your role as a health care worker, you are a vital part of the healthcare team. Learn the roles and responsibilities of each team member, and how you are the key link between the clients, their families, and the health care professional (HCP). You will learn how your role in client care, medication administration, asking the right questions and, in communicating this information to your team in a timely manner, is of vital importance to the well-being of the client.

Advanced Nursing Foot Care  Total Hours: 131  
The Advanced Nursing Foot Care course offered by PED - Education Inc. is the most comprehensive course available for nurses wanting the pursue a career as a foot care nurse. The course provides comprehensive theoretical knowledge in topics ranging from structure and function the foot, abnormal conditions, clients with diabetes, psychosocial behavior and operating a foot care business. This theoretical component is completely online with access to discussions with colleagues and the instructor. Students will apply theoretical knowledge gained in the online component to complete foot care assessments and conduct foot care services to clients under the supervision of a practicing foot care nurse. The clinical portion of the course will be completed at a local long-term care facility that serves residents of the downtown eastside of Vancouver. This setting is unique to the VCC Foot Care Nursing course, and students will have an opportunity to work with a variety of residents with unique and diverse challenges. Students must have an active BC nursing license and be in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Students should have reliable access to the internet, be able to print documents, and have moderate computer skills.
